    Me too.
  • Whilst the 'after' picture are more realistic, I actually prefer 'before' I find it to have a more cozy calm atmosphere.

  • Thanks for this. I definitely prefer the lighting and the way the shadows hit the skin with the mods. I prefer the cc skin and eyes, too.
If I make sims with the defaults, they tend to be very cartoony with big heads and huge eyes. They just don't look right as human-ish types. This would help.

  • All I need in the Sims is Magic, Seasons, Survival, Adventure

  • It looks over saturated and lighting mods like this are annoying when you play.
The Sims team purposely do things so you can play in the dark but still understand whats going on. Lighting mods like this mean you can lose your Sim in the dark.
  • The modded lighting is much better. Actually, @jackjack_k , a guru admitted a while ago they weren't content with the lighting themselves and I absolutely agree with that. It's bad inside (too dark or too yellow) and it was one of the things I noticed to be still the case (modless) when I opened the game a week ago. The colours in the 'after' pictures are way too mellow to be called over saturated. I in fact don't see much difference in colours, which is a good thing. They just catch more light, which is the purpose of light. Definitely going to install this mod, thanks OP.

I use this mod and it doesn’t make in-game darkness extremely dark – just less blue.
I also use default replacements (not only for skin and eyes, but also for eyebrows and some objects), I’ve always done, in previous games too. However, in TS4 it doesn’t work that great because the art style is too cartoony in general. The art style fitting the best to my preferences was in TS Medieval, hopefully TS5 will go in that direction
The other thing that bugs me in TS4 is that I can’t reach as high quality of textures as in TS3, and I can’t take my beloved face screenshots without blurriness Here is a comparison:
Another thing I do to make my sims at least slightly more realistic is using alpha hair, it definitely looks better for me than those plastic helmets.

  • Hmm, I may have to try the lighting mod. The outside lighting seems just fine, but for some reason the indoor lighting in this game is really abysmal.

It looks better. Using CC 3D eyelash replacements makes a difference too. I was able to make Sims look more realistic using CC. Mainly using eyelash, eyebrow, hair, makeup, and skin overlay CC. No CC eyes.

  • Cool! Thanks for the tips. I definitely prefer the warm lighting in your after pictures.

  • I can't see much of a difference other than brightness. There are some cc skin textures and such that will make Sims looks much more realistic but the trouble is for me, they stand out as looking out of place against everything else. What's the point in having detailed Sims when they still live in a cartoon world. It just looks odd and they seem like they don't belong in the game.
The mods you mention though seem to keep things looking quite natural still. I'd probably download the lighting fix.

I do agree about the tone (being too blue) however, that said, this still defeats the purpose of why Sims appear light even in the dark, is due to being able to play easily. I tried a mod similar in other Sims games, and while it looks good in terms of how it looks, it's not ideal for playing.
Also, the red in the couch for example, is way too over saturated. A couch isn't going to look that vibrant from a simple wall-light.
It goes into the opposite end of unrealistic. While The Sims 4 has too much darkness, and blue tones, this goes too warm, and too bright for the setting. And I'd prefer too blue (which isn't so bad when you change the lighting the game provides to warm) and use lights that admit a good amount of light, than have someone look like they bumped the contrast in my game.

It's a 2 Part mod. One part of the mod makes things less blue, and one changes the lighting engine.
The Sims is supposed to be cartoony, The Sims 2 and 3 took it into a different direction, which is fine, but the goal is to keep it cartoony. Which is why The Sims 2 and 3 looked more realistic, but the Sims themselves still looked like animated characters.
Realism in The Sims would be the death of the franchise, and EA know that.
I actually prefer The Sims 4 screenshot you took, instead of Sims 3. The Sims 3 one looks too close, so you can see the harshness and the fact his fave is a bunch of textures. The Sims 4 blurs slightly so you can't see the fact it's a bunch of textures and looks nice and smooth. If it bothers you, you can simply turn it off in the Options menu.
I prefer the 'plastic helmets' because it suits the game. If we had The Sims 4 hairs and the game was more realistic, then no. LOTS of games are now using the 'plastic helmet' hair because it's a current trend. The alpha hairs actually look outdated to me, and look like something from 2009. Also, while hair in The Sims 2 was fine, I hate the 'Sims 3 hair' look because it literally looks like your Sims are all wearing cheap wigs. There's only a small handful of Sims 3 hairs that I actually like.
Some of the base game Sims 4 hairs look awful, but post-base game, they all have a nice texture to them, and they look good.

Which option do you mean? All I found is “use uncompressed sim textures”, I have it checked, but it doesn’t provide as good texture quality as TS3 with HQ mod (I tried to recreate it in TS4, but it wasn’t possible, the effect was this, and it wasn’t exactly what I intended ) And why would realism in The Sims be the death of the franchise? It’s always been my dream about The Sims, realistic graphics and supernatural elements of gameplay, where I can smoothly join day-to-day life with magic, and realism would enrich that experience Normal day-to-day life without supernatual elements but with cartoony graphics isn’t as tempting for me as my vision; if The Sims doesn’t provide it for me, maybe at some point in the future a competing product will, who knows

  • Nah I don't think CC alpha hair looks better in the Sims 4, It's kind of tacky.

I agree I don't hope this mod will put sims in the light where there's no light. My issue in the game however is, that they're quite often even in the dark when there is a light. As for the red, I don't know if that wall-light is the only light in that room. The 'Before' pictures look way too gloomy and darkish to me.
OP, do you have links to the mods by the way?

Yeah that's the thing is the Sims 4 is supposed to be cartoonish, but it looks so dark and depressing and dull indoors with the lighting and faded versions of colors. I mean outdoors is bright, but indoors it looks like they are living in a morgue.

I AM ABSOLUTELY AGREED WITH YOU. It is true some TS4 base game's hair looks poorly designed, especially the one with so huge hair strands & thick textures. While TS3 base game's hairstyle models are the worst imo, even compared with TS2.
I would never use CC hairstyles for TS4, it just looks bad and they are not compatible at all. Except KIJIKO's CC hairstyles fits with TS4, it looks nice because it used the same concept of default TS4 hairstyles.
